Eggs, Two Ways Crochet Pattern
Hard boiled or sunny-side up, either way it’s “order up!”. Whether in the play kitchen or for an Easter Egg Hunt, these eggs are ready to roll (pun intended)!
Can I be honest? I hate eggs. I know, I know!
“Naomi, there’s a million ways to serve eggs, certainly you like eggs one way or another!”
My answer, nope. Not me. I tolerate deviled eggs, I choke down scrambled eggs and don’t even think about serving me anything with a soft yolk (barf!).
That being said, my kids LOVE eggs. Their current obsession is “egg-in-a-hole”. You know, where you cut a hole into a piece of toast and cook the egg inside it? The boys eat it like it’s going out go style. I can’t stand it.
However, there’s one type of egg I do love and that- you guessed it- is a crocheted egg! So far I’ve attempted hard boiled and sunny-side up but my boys’ latest breakfast obsession has me thinking that maybe I should give a crocheted egg-in-a-hole a try too! What do you think?
So let’s serve up some egg-cellent (I had to) yarny breakfast and get to crocheting!
The Supplies
Worsted (4) weight yarn (I love Comfy by We Crochet)
9g/20y Hard Boiled Egg Color
8g/17y white
3g/6.5y yellow.
4.00mm hook (I LOVE my Clover Amour hooks)
Scrap yarn or Poly-fil stuffing
Scissors
Optional: stitch markers (if you're a beginner I wouldn't forget this!)
The Abbreviations
CH - Chain
SC- Single Crochet
Slst- Slipstitch
HDC- Half Double Crochet
INV DEC- Invisible Decrease (see Stitch Insctructions)
SK- Skip
The Measurements
Hard boiled egg- appx. 3.5" tall and 6" around the middle. This will vary dramatically depending on the thickness of your yarn!
Sunny-side up egg- appx. 4" across.
Notes
This pattern uses US terms.
The turning chain does NOT count as a stitch unless otherwise notated in the pattern.
Numbers in parentheses, ie. (64), indicate the number of stitches in completed row/round.
Number BEFORE abbreviation (ex. 2DC) means 2 DC in the same stitch/space.
Number AFTER abbreviation (ex. DC 3) means 3 consecutive DC, each in their own stitch/space.
Stitches in parentheses ( ) are all to be worked in the same stitch/space.
Stitches in brackets [ ] are to be worked the indicated number of times (ex.[SC, 2HDC}X3)
Stitch Instructions
Seamless Finish
Complete your last stitch, cut your yarn and pull up the loop. Thread the tail onto your tapestry needle. Skip one, insert your needle under both loops of the next stitch.
Insert your needle through the back loop only of the last stitch you crocheted.
Pull your yarn through to make a lovely seamless finish.
Invisible Decrease
To create an Invisible Decrease start by inserting your hook into the front loop only of the next st. Then, instead of yarning over as in a standard decrease, insert your hook into the front loop only of the next st as well (3 loops on your hook).
Yarn over and pull through two loops.
Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops.
The Pattern
Hard Boiled Egg
1- Magic ring with 6 S2- 2SC 6 (12)3- [SC, 2SC] x 6 (18)
4- SC 18 (18)
5- [SC 2, 2SC] x 6 (24)
6-11- SC 24 (24)
12- [SC 2, INV DEC] x 6 (18)
13- SC 18 (18)
14- [SC, INV DEC] x 6 (12) Stuff your egg with yarn scraps or Polyfil.
15- [SC, INV DEC] x 4 (8)
16- Slpst once. Cut your yarn, leaving a long tail for closing.
Weaving in and out of the front loops only of your stitches, pull your yarn tight to cinch shut.
Do not tie a knot to secure, it will bulk up the tip of your egg. Instead, weave in your end and tie it off on the side of your egg.
Bury the tail and cut your yarn.
Sunny-Side Up Egg
Yolk
1- With yellow yarn, create a magic ring with 6SC(6)
2- 2SC x 6 (12)
3- [SC, 2SC] x 6 (18)
4&5- SC 18. Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing (18)
White
1- With white yarn, create a magic ring with 8HDC(8)
2- 2HDCx 8 (16)
3- [HDC, 2HDC] x 8 (24)
4- [HDC 2, 2HDC] x 8 (32)
5- [HDC 3, 2HDC] x 8 (40)
6- [HDC 4, 2HDC] x 8 (48)
7- [HDC 5, 2HDC] x 8 (56)
8- SC 1 and then Seamless Finish.
Sew yolk to white, lightly stuffing the yolk, and weave in your ends.
This final step is the MOST IMPORTANT.
Sit back and admire your work! It looks amazing.
You should be very proud!
One of my favorite variations of the hard-boiled egg pattern is to thrown in some colorwork for the perfect easter eggs! In my opinion, they knock the socks off those plastic eggs any day!
