Peppermint Placemat Crochet Pattern

To go big or not to go big, that seems to be the Holiday Question. Around here, we get a bit of both.

My Mother in Law goes ALL IN. She gets out the fancy china, creates elaborate centerpieces and the food- well really, the FEAST, is immaculate.

On my side of the family, ti’s much more low-key. We have snacks all day and either use the everyday dishes or paper plates.

Is one better than the other? Nope! I love that my kids get both sides of the Holiday Spirit and I love the variety!

When it comes to Christmas extravagance there’s one place where our families align and that is DECORATIONS. Both sides of the family go BIG or GO HOME when it comes to the tree, lights, nativity scenes and garlands and I LOVE IT.

I am a HUGE Christmas decor person. If It can go on the wall, on the tree, around the banister or on the hearth- out it comes! Bring on the tinsel, sparkles and bubble lights (remember bubble lights?!)!

So, of course, when the Peppermint Coaster Pattern came out, you know I already had a matching placemat pattern in the works! Maybe next year I’ll add more to the Peppermint Collection… perhaps a table runner… hmm…

The pattern itself is worked as a two-color spiral, which looks daunting but, I promise, it’s really rather simple once you get the hang of it (and I took LOTS of pictures to help it all make sense!).

Then you get these ADORABLE little fringe-bits on the sides to remind you of those classic peppermint candies.

I made the sample pattern in traditional red and white but have fun with it! Mix and match colors to create a truly personalized set!

So, without further ado, I present; The Peppermint Placemat Pattern

Supplies

  • SC- Single Crochet

  • HDC- Half Double Crochet DC- Double Crochet

Notes

  • This pattern uses US terms.

  • This pattern is worked with two working yarns, in a spiral. I HIGHLY recommend using locking stitch markers when switching yarns to prevent your work from unraveling.

  • Turning chain does NOT count as a stitch unless notated otherwise. Numbers in parentheses, ie. (64), indicate the number of stitches in completed row/round.

  • Number BEFORE abbreviation (ex. 2DC) means 2 DC in the same stitch/space.

  • Number AFTER abbreviation (ex. DC 3) means 3 consecutive DC, each in their own stitch/space

  • Stitches in parentheses ( ) are all to be worked in the same stitch/space.

  • Stitches in brackets [ ] are to be worked the indicated number of times (ex. X3 = 3 times)

Stitch Instructions

Seamless Finish

Create a beautiful finish to your crocheted piece by using your yarn tail and tapestry needle to make a "faux stitch" instead of an unsightly knot.

Instructions

Complete your last stitch, cut your yarn an pull up the loop. Thread the tail onto your tapestry needle. Skipping the next stitch, insert your needle under both loops of the next stitch.

Insert your needle through the top loop only of the last stitch you crocheted.

Pull your yarn thought to make a lovely finish.

Switch back to your colored yarn. HDC 2, SC 2, slst 2, seamless finish (see Stitch Instructions).

Switch back to white yarn. HDC 2, SC 2, slst 2, seamless finish (see Stitch Instructions).

Weave in your ends.

The Fringe

To create the fringe bits cut 12 10" strands of white yarn.

Fold a piece of your yarn in half, creating a loop. Insert hook from the right side of your coaster and catch your yarn loop. Pull the yarn loop halfway through.

With your thumb and index finger, reach through the yarn loop and grab the yarn tails, pulling them through the loop. Pull tight to knot.

Repeat with 4 more yarn strands on this side and then with 5 strands on opposite side.

Using the two remaining strands of yarn, tie the attached strands into tassel shapes, using 2 tight knots. One of the strands from your knot will be pointing towards your work, go ahead and snip that off.

With tapestry needle point, pull apart the yarn tails so they fray and use scissors to tidy up the tassel and trim to your desired length (I do about 2").

This final step is the MOST IMPORTANT.

Sit back and admire your work! It looks amazing. You should be very proud!
