Peppermint Coaster Crochet Pattern

If you know one thing about me; it's that I LOVE crochet. If you know two things about me, the second is probably that I absolutely adore a nice cup of hot tea (I'm currently obsessed with a homemade London Fog in the morning).

My constant need for a well steeped beverage does come at a cost though! My countertops do NOT appreciate all the tea-rings left all over them. You should see my windowsill! Is this enough to discourage my caffeine-fueled addiction? Nope! Absolutely not! So a solution is in order.

And, with it being the holiday season currently, a festive solution at that.

Cue the Peppermint Coaster.

Cute, Christmas-esque and oh-so-sweet, my problem was solved!

If you find yourself in the same boat I'm in- or need of a quick crocheted Christmas gift- read on!

The pattern itself is worked as a two-color spiral, which looks daunting but, I promise, it’s really rather simple once you get the hang of it (and I took LOTS of pictures to help it all make sense!).

Then you get these ADORABLE little fringe-bits on the sides to remind you of those classic peppermint candies!

I made the sample pattern in my favorite colors (white and purple) but you can do anything you want! Go traditional with red and white or mix it up with a blue, green, yellow- really any color you want!

The Supplies

The Abbreviations

  • CH - Chain

  • SC- Single Crochet

  • HDC- Half Double Crochet

  • DC- Double Crochet

  • Slst- Slipstitch

  • INC- Increase

  • SK- Skip

Notes

  • This pattern uses US terms.

  • This pattern is worked with two working yarns, in a spiral. I HIGHLY recommend using locking stitch markers when switching yarns to prevent your work from unraveling.

  • Since there are two portions to each round (one in each color), the instructions are broken up as "1" and "1.5" per completed round.

  • Turning chain does NOT count as as stitch unless notated otherwise.

  • Numbers in parentheses, ie. (64), indicate the number of stitches in completed row/round.

  • Number BEFORE abbreviation (ex. 2DC) means 2 DC in the same stitch.

  • Number AFTER abbreviation (ex. DC 3) means 3 consecutive DC, each in their own stitch.

  • Stitches in parentheses ( ) are all to be worked in the same stitch/space.

  • Stitches in brackets [ ] are to be worked the indicated number of times (ex. X3 = 3 times)

Special Stitches

The Seamless Finish

Create a beautiful finish to your crocheted piece by using your yarn tail and tapestry needle to make a "faux stitch" instead of an unsightly knot.

Instructions

Complete your last stitch, cut your yarn and pull up the loop. Thread the tail onto your tapestry needle. Skipping the next stitch, insert your needle under both loops of the second stitch from the last stitch you crocheted

Insert your needle through the top loop only of the last stitch you crocheted

Pull your yarn through to make a lovely seamless finish.

See how pretty that is! It's easily among my favorite crochet "hacks".

The Pattern

The Coaster

1- Starting with the colored yarn, ch4 and slst into the 1st ch. This creates your “starting ring”. Working into the starting ring, ch1 and DC 6 into the center of your ring. Secure your working loop with a stitch marker or pulling it up tall and remove your hook. (6)

1.5- Attach the white yarn with a slst into the starting ring and ch 1. DC 6 into the starting ring. Secure/pull up your working loop and remove your hook. (12 total stitches in Round 1)

2- Pick up your colored yarn and work 2DC in each white stitch (6 times). Secure/pull up your working loop and remove your hook. Mark the 1st st of this round with a stitch marker for future reference. (12)

2.5- Pick up your white yarn and work 2DC in each colored stitch (6 times). Secure/pull up your working loop and remove your hook. Mark the 1st st of this round with a stitch marker for future reference. (24 total stitches in Round 2)

3- Pick up your colored yarn and work [2DC, DC] x 6 (up to the marked stitch). Secure/pull up your working loop and remove your hook. Place marker. (18)

3.5- Pick up your white yarn and work [2DC, DC] x 6 (up to the marked stitch). Secure/pull up your working loop and remove your hook. Place marker in 1st st. (36 total stitches in Round 3)

4- Pick up your colored yarn and work [2DC, DC 2] x 6 (up to the marked stitch). Secure/pull up your working loop and remove your hook. Place marker in 1st st. (24)

4.5- Pick up your white yarn and work [2DC, DC 2] x 6 (up to the marked stitch). Secure/pull up your working loop and remove your hook. Place marker in 1st st. (48 total stitches in Round 4)

5- Pick up your colored yarn and work [2DC, DC 3] x 6 (up to the marked stitch). Secure/pull up your working loop and remove your hook. Place marker in 1st st. (30)

5.5- Pick up your white yarn and work [2DC, DC 3] x 6 (up to the marked stitch). Secure/pull up your working loop and remove your hook. Place marker in 1st st. (60 total stitches in Round 5)

Switch back to your colored yarn. HDC 2, SC 2, slst 2,. Cut your yarn and pull through.

Switch back to white yarn. HDC 2, SC 2, slst 2. Cut your yarn and pull through.

Seamless Finish on both sides (see Stitch Instructions).

Weave in your ends.

The Fringe

To create the fringe bits cut 10 6" strands of white yarn.

Fold a strand of your yarn in half, creating a loop. Insert your hook from the right side of your coaster and catch your yarn loop. Pull the yarn loop halfway through.

With your thumb and index finger, reach through the yarn loop and grab the yarn tails, pulling them through the loop. Pull tight to knot.

Repeat with 3 more yarn strands on this side and then with 4 strands on opposite side.

Using the two remaining strands of yarn, tie the attached strands into tassel shapes, using 2 tight knots. One of the strands from your knot will be pointing towards your work, go ahead and snip that off.

With tapestry needle point, pull apart the yarn tails so they fray and use scissors to tidy up the tassel and trim to your desired length (I do about 1")

This final step is the MOST IMPORTANT.

Sit back and admire your work! It looks amazing. You should be very proud!

IDEA: Try making multiple in several colors for a unique and beautiful set!

Now you’re ready for Holiday Dinner or last minute gift-giving!
