Did you know that I really got my start crocheting with little fruits and vegetables? Yes, my first project was the little blue ball- but I grew my skills by making little produce pals! From blueberries to pumpkins and everything in between- I even crocheted a dragonfruit (don’t worry, that pattern is coming soon!). So when the idea to crochet my way through the ABC’s struck, I knew it simply had to be with foods!

So today we start our alphabet journey through the delights of crocheted cuisine! And we are starting out with a wildly popular item, though it seams you either love it or you hate it! Avocado Toast.

Grown primarily in California here in the US (though they were first planted in Florida in the 1800’s), this superfood got it’s “artistic” debut when it was paired with a sturdy slice of toast and some microgreens- and “avocado toast” was born.

This crocheted tribute to the heart-healthy fad consists of several pieces sewn together to create a piece worthy of any play kitchen! But why am I still going on and on? Let’s get to crocheting!

The Supplies 

• Worsted (4) weight yarn (I really like Brava Worsted by WeCrochet)
  14g/30y in cream
  5g/11y in green
  3g/7y in dark brown

• 5.00mm hook (I LOVE my Clover Amour and Tulip Etimo hooks!)

• Scissors 

• Tapestry needle

• Optional: stitch markers (if you're a beginner I wouldn't forget this!) 

The Abbreviations 

• CH - Chain

• SC- Single Crochet

• Slst- Slipstitch

• HDC- Half Double Crochet

• DC- Double Crochet

• SK- Skip

• F/O- Finish Off 

The Gauge 

• 1.5" x 1.5" square should contain 6 rows of 6 SC st. 

The Measurements 

• Finished product measures 4" across and 4.5" tall. 

Notes 

• This pattern is worked both straight across and in the round., dependent upon the piece.

• This pattern uses US terms.

• Turning chains do NOT count as stitches unless specifically notated. Numbers in parentheses, ie. (64), indicate the number of stitches in completed row/round. 

• Number BEFORE abbreviation (ex. 2DC) means 2 DC in the same stitch/space.

• Number AFTER abbreviation (ex. DC 3) means 3 consecutive DC, each in their own stitch/space 

• Stitches in parentheses ( ) are all to be worked in the same stitch/space.

• Stitches in brackets [ ] are to be worked the indicated number of times (ex. [SC, 2HDC]X3) 
  

Stitch Instructions 

Single Crochet in the Back Bumps 

When you look at a chain stitch there are three loops. One is the “back loop”, one is the “front loop” and, if you turn the chain over, you will see the third loops, known as the “back bump”. To SC in the back bump, simply insert your hook into that loop and SC as normal. The benefit to this technique is that is creates a lovely finished edge to your piece. See the photos below to see what I mean.

The Pattern

Main Body of Toast 

Make two with cream yarn. 

1- ch 15, SC in the back bumps starting in the 2nd ch from hook. SC 13. Ch1 & turn (14) 

2-13- SC 14, ch1 & turn (14) 

14- SC 6, ch1 & turn (6) 

15- SK1, SC 5, ch1 & turn (5) 

16- SC 5, ch1 & turn (5) 

17- SK1, SC 4, ch1 & turn (4) 

18- SC 4 across, SC 4 down, SC 8 across. Ch1 & turn (17) 

19- SC 6, ch1 & turn (6) 

20- SK1, SC 5, ch1 & turn (5) 

21- SC 5, ch1 & turn (5) 

22- SK1, SC 4, turn but do NOT ch1. (4) 

23- loosely slst 4 across, SC 4 down, slst 2 across and F/O.

Avocado Smear 

Make one with green yarn. 

1-Magic ring with 8HDC. Slst to join and ch1 (8) 

2- 2HDC 8, slst to join and ch1 (16) 

3- [2HDC, HDC] X 8, slst to join and ch1 (24) 

4- sc, hdc, dc, 2dc, dc, hdc, sc, slst 2, sc, hdc, dc, 2dc, dc, hdc, sc, slst 2, sc, hdc, 2dc, dc, hdc, slst (27)

Slst to join. Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. 

Assembly

Sew the Avocado Smear to one of your Main Body of Toast pieces.

Using your dark brown yarn, facing the wrong sides of your work together, SC all the way around your bread pieces, going through both pieces with each st, putting 2SC in each corner, to create the “crust.

Finish off and weave your ends! 

This final step is the MOST IMPORTANT. 

Sit back and admire your work! It looks amazing. You should be very proud!
